Rigolo image

All the children at our school use the Rigolo French Scheme as a framework for their lessons. We all enjoy the sessions where we meet the characters Bof (the dragon) Jake, Polly, Mum and Dad, as well as the odd looking old lady of Castle Rigolo Madame Moulon.

The sessions are interactive and fun ending with a written element that is retained and stored in the children’s individual French folders, this is often used to help recap and remind children of the previous session’s vocabulary and knowledge.

Implementation

The sessions are taught by the class teacher in class, and they follow the Rigolo Scheme through the 3 units of work for Years 3,4,5 & 6.

To allow for a full session to be covered, 30 minutes every two weeks will be completed. Children can take their French folders home at the end of the year, and begin a new folder each school year.

There is also a bank of short film clips produced during the Covid online broadcasting of French via the schools connections with the children. These can be used to support or add into the lessons being taught that week.

To add into that also, there is a set of staff made seasonal French activities on the schools T: drive which are freely accessible for staff to use if they wish.

Content

The children will cover 6.5 hours of French per year, covering vocabulary and links to very catchy songs. The units begin in Year 3 with basic Conversational French, objects around the classroom and parts of the body. Moving onto Animals, Family members and Celebrations in Year 4. The upper end of KS2 Starts looking at telling the time in year 5 and begins to prepare for year 6 and secondary school by looking at holiday destinations, eating and food and celebrations at the end of the year with a trip to the circus.

Each of the units of work spends time teaching as well as recapping previous sessions work in either a quiz on paper of an interactive game online where the children can show off their skills.

Areas of Assessment

At the end of the year, members of staff can complete a simple tick sheet for each child in the 4 main areas they have covered in the subject throughout the year;

Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing & Grammar

It is also entertaining and fun to see if the spoken/sung French songs they have learnt throughout the year, have been retained and enjoyed to the end.
