Intent

At Bearbrook, we strive to provide children with a PE curriculum which enables them to thrive physically and mentally. The aim of PE is to help children to cope with both success and failure in life, and to enhance a life-long fitness and positive life choices.  We use the 'real PE' program to support staff to deliver outstanding PE curriculum with confidence.

Real PE

'real PE' have a unique child-centred approach that transforms how we teach PE to engage and challenge EVERY child. It develops the key abilities children need to be successful within PE and Sport and across the curriculum and inspires teachers to enjoy teaching PE, develop their knowledge and transforms their confidence to deliver outstanding lessons.

How the improvements will be sustainable in the future

Through offering a wide range of activities for our pupils which are fun and engaging, we are promoting a life-long love for physical activity. Children participate in PE lessons, which incorporate games and challenges to suit all abilities. The interactive videos and songs for younger years keep the children engaged, and are a tool for staff to use to ensure the delivery of PE is strong throughout the school.

Implementation

Implementation

PE at Bearbrook is taught by a combination of class teachers, qualified sports coaches and a professional dance teacher. Children have equal opportunities to take part in a range of sports and physical activities within a nurturing environment. Children are encouraged to participate in exercise throughout the day, through walking the daily mile, PE lessons, clubs, outdoor learning and lunch provision.

Our PE curriculum is structured to provide children with a range of sports experiences which teach and develop physical skills through competitive, team and individual sports. Children develop a range of fundamental skills such as agility, balance, coordination and fitness. These are taught using PE equipment appropriate for the age and needs of the pupils. In year 4, children have a series of structured swimming lessons taught by qualified swimming coaches.

Through our provision, all children are able to take part and those with additional needs are supported. Activities may need to be adapted, with the aim for all children to thrive and succeed, gaining knowledge, confidence and motivation.

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on every year and planned effectively to maximise learning for all children.
