Intent

At Bearbrook our vision is to inspire our children to be reflective, thoughtful and enquiring as they learn about religion, belief, values and human life.

We aim to develop their knowledge and understanding for the principle religions and different worldviews, so children gain an appreciation and respect for the diverse, multi-cultural community they live in.

Through stories, beliefs and traditions, children are able to gain a greater understanding of the world and their place in it. Children will have the opportunity to question, explore and develop their own beliefs and opinions - always keeping in consideration the thoughts and beliefs of others.

We strive to see our children flourish and grow together embracing our school values of Empowerment, Integrity, Trust, Nurture and Respect.

Implementation

At Bearbrook, RE is taught through bi-weekly sessions in order to have our pupils reflect on their individual identity, principles, standards, and how these all shape their lives. During our lessons, the pupils will experience learning through a variety of activities.

The books used during the lessons provide our pupils with a record of their learning and progress and help them gain a better understanding of their beliefs and values. With the help of these materials, our pupils will be able to equip themselves with the knowledge and understanding of their spiritual and moral selves.

When teaching Religious Education, we follow the agreed Buckinghamshire syllabus, SACRE. Within the syllabus, children will be able to show a basic understanding of Christianity and at least one other religion in Key Stage 1, focussing on important people and places, special things, stories and occasions. In Key Stage 2, pupils will show knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other faiths and beliefs, and can explain what difference faith makes in family life. Also, to understand what it means to belong to a religious community and the influence religious faith has on individuals and communities.

Impact

At Bearbrook children will have the ability to consider different points of view, negotiate and resolve conflict through the use of diplomacy and be able to explain their own beliefs to others in an articulate and effective way.

The development of religious literacy provides a way of understanding and appreciating the diversity of beliefs in the world and our local community, and how different faiths influence different cultures. It is a way of helping pupils develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others, and how different world views can contribute to a better world.

As pupils develop their religious literacy, they will better comprehend the challenges and opportunities of living in a multi-faith society, and how different religious and non-religious worldviews impact on one another. Within the classroom, pupils will be able to understand how beliefs and values shape the way people think and act, and contribute to the development of understanding and respect for different cultures and ways of life.

By developing their religious literacy, pupils will have the capacity to think, reflect, and understand the complexities of the world they live in. They will be able to navigate different religious and cultural contexts with respect and understanding, and be able to engage in meaningful dialogue with people of different backgrounds and beliefs.

This will be invaluable to them in their future lives, as they will be able to make informed decisions and take part in global dialogue and understanding. Ultimately, pupils will leave Beabrook with the ability to understand the world they live in by developing their religious literacy, and the capacity to make sense of their own and others’ experience, beliefs and values.
